Lucy Bennett Black died from leukemia on August 4, 2003 .   The daughter of Phil and Susan Black, she attended Mountain Brook Junior High in Alabama  and was a member of St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church.  Her friends and family assembled this little book as a tribute to Lucy.  The book begins and ends with essays and poems about Lucy by family and friends.  The heart of the book, however, is Lucy’s own poems which she left behind.  This is not the work of a mature poet and one is tempted to say “thank goodness.”  They are, instead, the poems of a young woman full of love, spirit, wit, and a gift of perception.   There is joy in these pages, the joy of a fine young person who led a good life, who loved and was loved.  And, of course, there is the reminder of the flip side of love, the reality of loss, that some wonderful souls are taken from us far too soon.
